STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
Forward
As the new millennium began,
it was clear that ASCO should begin a process of reevaluating its strategic
priorities and directions. A review of the existing plan was conducted resulting
in a Strategic Directions Retreat in March 2002 for the ASCO Board of Directors.
The retreat had two themes, the role of the Board and the future of ASCO as
an organization. The key board responsibilities were identified as the Board's
role was discussed and clarified. As ASCO's program priorities were discussed,
it became clear that ASCO's strategic objectives needed to be more closely aligned
with program and budgetary priorities. ASCO's current Strategic
Objectives were developed as a result of that process. "Charges"
for the various ASCO committees and task forces were developed utilizing these
objectives. A process for identifying priorities tied to budget initiatives
was established. Program priorities and strategic direction are now discussed
at every ASCO Board meeting to keep the priority setting process timely and
consistent with a quick changing environment.
