Applicants
With 16 out of 20 schools in the U.S. and Puerto Rico reporting (one school did not report; three additional schools do not yet have an entering class):
- For academic year 2008-2009, 2,822 individuals applied for admission to the schools and colleges of optometry in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
- However, a total number of 7,766 applications were processed by the same 16 schools and colleges of optometry for the academic year 2008-2009, since many students apply to more than one institution.
Enrollment
- At the schools and colleges of optometry in the United States (including Puerto Rico), there were a total of 5,595 optometry students enrolled during the 2008-2009 academic year.
- For the 2008-2009 academic year 64.7% of the student body was female and 35.3% was male. In addition, the student body was 59.2% White American, 26.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, 4.5% Hispanic or Latino, 3.0% African American, 0.4% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and 6.6% Other.
- Each school averaged the grade point averages of their fall 2009 entering class. The highest of these averages was 3.61 and the lowest was 3.10.

Graduates
- In 2008, a total of 1,317 optometry students received regular O.D. degrees from the schools and colleges of optometry in the United States (including Puerto Rico). This is a slight increase from the 1,291 degrees awarded in 2007.
- Of the optometry students who graduated in academic year 2007-2008 (1,342 receiving regular O.D. and special program degrees), 64.9% were female and 35.1% were male. In addition, 62.4% were White American, 22.7% were Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, 4.8% were Hispanic or Latino, 3.4% were African American, 0.1% were American Indian or Alaskan Native and 6.2% were Other.
