ASCO’s Inspiring Future ODs program is a practitioner-based career marketing effort that encourages optometrists to speak to their patients and other qualified young people about optometry as a rewarding future career. This program is part of the ASCO-AOA Applicant Development Project on Further Developing a Robust, Diverse, and Highly Qualified National Applicant Pool.
According to ASCO data, Doctors of Optometry are the profession’s best promoters. If you have a patient in your office or any other young person you think could contribute to and benefit from the profession of optometry, consider assisting that person in gaining further insight and information about this fulfilling career choice. ASCO is pleased to offer free materials that will help start the conversation in your office or your community.
“True Stories” Booklet – This colorful and engaging booklet conveys to prospective students true stories about how optometrists improve the lives of real people — significantly and immediately — through the gift of sight. The “True Stories” booklet is formatted into two distinct sections, inspiration and information. The first section showcases inspirational stories, such as “Today I kept a survivor’s hope from dimming” and “Today I made sure a working man would keep working” that describe the role of the optometrist in diagnosing and treating the patient and its impact. The second section of the booklet contains an informational narrative that educates the reader on the rewards and benefits of a career in optometry, outlines the educational requirements of the profession, and provides contact information for all 22 schools and colleges of optometry.
“Be a Doctor of Optometry: Put Your Future in Focus” Video – A diverse group of students, faculty, administrators, and practitioners give their perspective on making a difference in daily lives, the unlimited career opportunities, work/life balance, and how vision is our most valued sense.
