Clinical Manual of Specialized Contact Lens Prescribing
TR Scheid, ed. Boston: Butterworth-Heinemann, 2002. 222 pages, $45.00.
This book is enjoyable reading from cover to cover for optometric students, recent graduates and experienced practitioners alike. The authors break down complex fitting philosophies into clinically relevant information. The reader is not overwhelmed with theory found in more academically oriented textbooks.
Dr. Terry Scheid, the book’s editor, collaborated with ten contributing authors to write eight chapters ranging from basic contact lens fitting to more advanced topics. Therefore, each chapter has a slightly different format and writing style. There are 31 color plates in the middle of the book along with several black-and-white photographs and drawings located throughout the book.
Chapters provide overviews of rigid gas permeable contact lens fitting, rigid lens modification, toric soft contact lenses, keratoconus, toric rigid lens design, optics and fitting, post-surgical contact lens fitting and orthokeratology. A soft contact lens identification chart is one of three helpful appendices.
A few of the topics could have been covered in more detail, but the majority of chapters contain extensive references to assist the reader in obtaining more detailed information if desired. Additional areas of specialized contact lens care, such as pediatric and multifocal contact lenses, are not addressed.
